Utah Inmate Search
The Utah prison structure comprises two state prisons and 29 local jails in Utah's 29 counties. The two state penitentiaries are the Utah State Correctional Facility (USCF) and the Central Utah Correctional Facility (CUCF). USCF is a 200-acre co-ed facility located five miles west of the Salt Lake City International Airport, while the CUCF houses up to 1,800 male inmates.
The National Institute of Corrections estimated that 6,009 inmates were housed in the 2 state prisons and all local Utah county jails as of December 31, 2022. In addition, the Utah Department of Corrections' approximate 2,300 employees supervise more than 17,000 individuals in the community and an estimated 6,400 incarcerated individuals.
The Utah Department of Corrections (UDC) runs an inmate placement program in which it reaches out to county jails throughout the state to house inmates due to insufficient bed capacity in state prisons. The program sends eligible inmates to counties that have contracted with the State to provide jail housing. Currently, only 20 county jails take state inmates.
The State of Utah recorded an incarceration rate of 176 inmates per 100,000 residents in 2022.
Utah Department Corrections Inmate Search
The Utah Department of Corrections oversees the operations of the two state prisons. The Department collaborates with a wide range of stakeholders ranging from the Board of Pardons and Parole to community treatment providers, NGOs, and law enforcement agencies, to effect positive change in the lives of inmates and those served.
To act in its capacity and authority to make its record accessible to the public, the Utah Department of Corrections offers an offender search tool on its website to look up inmates under the jurisdiction of the Department.
Find Inmate by Name
The Utah Department of Corrections' offender search tool allows users to find inmates by name. This tool has a "search by name" feature with three fields for "first name", "middle name", and "last name." By providing the name of an inmate in any of the three fields, you can find an inmate held in any of the state prisons. Although providing only one of the three names of an inmate will yield search results with potential matches, providing all three names will provide a more accurate result as it narrows the search results.
Find Inmate by Number
Other than the "search by name" feature on the UDC offender search tool, the tool also has a "search by offender number" feature that allows users to find an inmate by providing the inmate's UDC-issued identification number. This search offers a more precise result than one performed using the "find inmate by name" feature. Upon inputting the inmate's ID number, the search tool will return a matching result.

Are Incarceration Records Public Information in Utah?

Incarceration records are public information in Utah under the Government Records Access and Management Act. This Act outlines the nature of records considered public in the state. It allows Utah residents to make requests to the official custodian of public records for inspection and copying. Therefore, anyone intending to obtain Utah court records may submit a public record request to the Department of Corrections to inspect or copy an inmate's record.
While Utah inmate incarceration records are generally public, some records may be sealed from public view, while some parts of incarceration records may not also be accessible to the public. Sensitive parts of an incarceration record, such as medical records are usually not available to the public. Also, when a court has expunged or sealed an incarceration record, it is not available for public access.
Federal Prisons in Utah
Utah is one of a few states in the county without a federal penitentiary. While the Federal Bureau of Prisons oversees federal prisons in the United States, no correctional institutions managed by the Bureau currently exist in Utah.
